HR News
Welcome to our regular HR news bulletin.
There has been little major change to employment legislation recently, but below are details on some of the key changes, along with an overview on managing redundancy. In particular we have commented on the Right to Work in the UK legislation that changed on 29th February 2008, outlined in our article titled Employing illegal immigrants could mean a fine of up to £10,000.
With the economy looking uncertain, some organisations are tightening their belts, but forward looking ones are keen to recruit and develop their employees. We therefore have taken this opportunity to remind you how you can best utilise one of your greatest resources, your people - successful businesses are those that attract, develop, motivate and retain the best people and therefore you should consider:
- Setting the standards and expectations required within your business through strong recruitment and selection procedures, relevant employment contracts and employee handbooks, and your people policies and procedures.
- Salary/benefits benchmarking to ensure that your salary and benefits budget is maximised and you remain competitive in your marketplace.
- Managing the performance of your employees through development, coaching, appraisal/review and where necessary managing underperformers to achieve the required standards or removing them from the business.
- Communicating with employees, keeping them updated on successes within the business, understanding their perception and developing, where appropriate, improved ways of working – this doesn’t have to be through formal systems, often informal approaches work better.
- Using statistical information to assist in managing employee turnover and sickness absence, and understanding the cost of activities to the business, helping you to identify areas of improvement.
We would appreciate your feedback and any comments on areas that you would like further information about, so please contact us.
