Health & Safety Statistics and Fines during 2016/17

The Health and safety executive (“HSE”) have just released information regarding not only injury and fatality statistics but also the fines imposed on companies for the last financial year. These fines relate to prosecutions dealt with by the courts for many types of offences relating to H&S.

In 2016/17 fewer prosecutions took place than the previous year, however, total fines have increased by 80% to £70 million from £38 million in 2015/2016.  This indicates a massive increase in average fines relating to the new sentencing guidelines that came into force for England and Wales in February 2016.

The new system links fines directly to turnover and has seen fines in excess of a £1 million for an individual injury.
