Fraud/False Accounting/Theft
Criminal cases are different to civil matters as we are usually instructed by the defence to address prosecution evidence presented by the Inland Revenue, Customs and Excise, DTI or the Crown Prosecution Service.
Case Study - Classic Car Fraud
We were instructed in a classic car fraud.
The total amount the defendant was charged with ran to over a million pounds of undisclosed profits.
We were instructed to examine the accountant's report for the prosecution and check it to the evidence.
Essentially the defendant had kept two sets of records but we were able to highlight numerous deficiencies and a fundamental flaw in the prosecution accountants report that led to a significant reduction in the charges.
Other examples have been a "Phoenix" VAT fraud, advanced fee fraud, a postmistress accused of theft and an accountant accused of false accounting and theft.
