Richard Formby FCA MAE
Richard is the Partner heading our Forensic Accounting Service. He has worked for 20 years in business advisory and financial investigations areas and has over 15 years experience as a Forensic Accountant.
Richard is a practising member of the Academy of Experts and is on the Law Society list of experts. He has acted in a wide variety of civil and criminal matters in over 500 cases including:

- Personal injury claims involving the employed and self-employed.
- Earnings and dependency loss reports in respect of claims involving a broad variety of businesses. These frequently involve situations where the relevant business was in a start-up, growth or decline phase.
- Reports on consequential loss arising from a variety of events from business interruption to professional negligence.
- Shareholder and partnership disputes and warranty claims.
- Disputed share or business valuations.
- Investigation, examination and reporting in matters of prosecution for theft, money laundering, false accounting and fraud in general. He has been instructed in fraud cases prosecuted by the DTI, Customs and Excise and the Inland Revenue.
- Other types of matters include pension loss claims and the financial aspects of matrimonial cases.
The majority of Richard's appointments in civil matters are as Single Joint Witness, however he also takes appointments as Party Expert, Shadow Expert or Expert Determiner.
Via membership of the Academy of Experts, Richard and his team keep up to date on all matters affecting the duties and obligations of Expert Witnesses. All of our partners and professional staff attend regular training courses to ensure that their professional knowledge is kept up to date as legislation and best practice change.
In addition Richard has given lectures to groups of solicitors on the loss quantum and accountancy aspects of many cases that lawyers and insurers will experience. In great demand as a guest speaker, he has presented at various conferences hosted by leading regional barristers chambers and in-house presentations to major national claimant and defendant personal injury solicitors. Richard Formby's Professional Profile
Richard trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Spicer and Oppenheim - dealing with a broad portfolio of small/medium sized trading entities, as well as professional practices, colleges and high-tech enterprises. From 1985 to 1993 he worked at the Bristol office of Spicer and Oppenheim and then Touche Ross where he specialised in advising clients on corporate finance, business viability, business planning matters and undertook financial investigations for acquisitions and take-overs and pre-insolvency and rescue situations.
He also specialised in forensic accounting matters and has dealt with a number of large criminal prosecution cases.
He joined Monahans in 1993 to set up our specialist service in forensic accounting and litigation support matters. Richard has continued to provide advice on financial investigation matters and is a member of the corporate finance faculty of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
